3 takeaways from our Founders Table event

This week the Chancellor announced the UK budget, raising important conversations about the economy and business growth during this corona hangover and lockdown restrictions.

But what does it take to run a thriving communications business nowadays? Is it as easy as the #bosslife social media posts would have us believe?

On Thursday 4th March, we invited a panel of PR and strategy business owners to share their start-up stories as part of our Founders Table event.

Our panellists:

·         Eva Akase Simpson, Columnist and Founder, ES-PR

·        Amber Muotto, Freelance Entertainment Publicist & Founder, AMPR

·        Lewis Iwu, Co-Founder and CEO, Purpose Union

·         Ayo Adepoju, Founder, We Plug GOOD Music

The lively discussion was moderated by our Founder and CEO Kamiqua Pearce. Here are 3 top takeaways from the night:

  1. Invest in core business services (eg an accountant, admin support) as soon as you can. By delegating back-office tasks to the experts, you’ll free up more of your time to focus on building your brand, bringing in new clients and generating more revenue.

  2. When sourcing clients, ask yourself: ‘Who do I want to work with?’ Check your network for anyone who could connect you to your dream client. If your clients are happy with your work, leverage their networks - the world works on recommendations.

  3. There’s no such thing as the ‘perfect time’ to venture out on your own. It’s a deeply personal decision which can take minutes or years to arrive at. If you’re considering the move but want to be sure first, ask yourself these two questions as a start: 1) ‘If I start my own agency, will I get to do work I’m proud of?’ and 2) Given my circumstances, will going out on my own be an enjoyable experience. Remember, there’s no ‘right’ answer - just the one that feels right to you.

Big thanks to our four incredible panellists for their honesty and humour.
